Willingness

It's Fall!! Yes, that deserved capital letters. I am enjoying the evolution of fall here in West Virginia as the leaves turn a variety of colors; brilliant reds, burnt oranges, amber and gold. What a brilliant kaleidoscope for the eyes. The air is a bit crisper, especially in the morning, pumpkins are showing up in stores and in the fields. Time for all my favorite spices and flavors!! Speaking of that, I made a delicious bread pudding that I have gotten requests for the recipes from family members, so I thought I'd share it with you.

Bread Pudding
1 loaf of day-old bread (I used Texas Toast-only bread I had at the time)
4 c. milk (I used 3 c. 1% milk and 1 c. whipping cream)
2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. butter, melted
3 eggs, beaten
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 c. semi-sweet chocolate chunks (You can also use butterscotch chips)
nutmeg (to taste, I used about 1/2 tsp.)
cinnamon (to taste, 1 used about 1 1/2 tsp.)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9x13" pan.

2. In a large bowl, combine bread, milk, sugar, butter, eggs, vanilla, and chocolate chips;
mixture should be the consistency of oatmeal. Pour into prepared pan.

3. Bake in preheated oven 1 hour, until nearly set. It should still jiggle a bit. Serve warm or cold.

Hope you enjoy. Let me know if you try it and what you thought.

A few Sundays ago, Audra and Ron blessed their new daughter Ava, so of course we had to take pictures when we gathered for dinner at my place that evening. Here are a couple of shots that many of you will relate to. (Landon was hiding somewhere being camera shy. I'll get him yet. He's as tall as me now!!)

Before

After

Bart did a great job capturing the reality of what it takes to get a family picture around here!!

Here are a couple more shots of Ava. I could just eat her with a spoon!!

She wore the same blessing dress her mom did. I thought that was so special and she looked beautiful!!

Thank you to all that responded to my last post. Les so appreciated all the Happy Birthdays and I loved hearing your wise council and hearing about your experiences. You help me be a better person.

This week I have been thinking a lot about Willingness. The willingness to change, to get out of our comfort zones, a willingness to examine and be honest with ourselves about who we are now and who we would like to become, what we want our lives to be about. I believe we are constantly changing and growing as we experience and understand new things and so our examination of our willingness is also a constant process. When we see ourselves repeating the same pattern over and over, we have an opportunity to be willing to step out of what we "always" do and choose something new that would support us in making progress towards what we want in our life. Willingness can be large and small, and it all is still motion for change. The willingness to think about willingness is movement. I have been examining my life as a working mom and exploring the different feelings that brings up for me. This has been a difficult transition for me. I am willing to investigate that there are different versions of what "mother" looks like. I love being a mother more than any of my other titles and I am willing to keep loving it just as intensely and also finding different ways to live it. I can't be at home like I used to be. My time is now divided. I can use the time I have with them as quality time. I can make sure I make it to the soccer games, recitals and crossroads. I can be willing to let Les be a bigger presence in our home and strengthen his relationships with the boys. I can take them on special dates, and snuggle with them at night. I can do so many things that when I'm not willing to look at "motherhood" differently I can't see. Willingness to look outside my comfort zone and my expectations of what I should look like gives me hope, peace, love, and acceptance. We each have our things we feel stuck in. How can Willingness help you start to get unstuck?

Rachel, I really needed this post today. With Jake taking a dramatic pay decrease with his new job, I've decided to try and join the workforce again to help our family financially. I have been struggling with feelings of what a 'mother' is and all the roles she plays. I never saw myself working out of the home until Josh was in school, but because of our situation that most likely will not happen. I remember the days when Ben was born and I yearned for my old job, the reassurance from supervisors that I was doing my best, the feeling of "contributing" to the family. Over the years though, I became comfortable in my role as a stay-at-home mom and I began to love it all. Now I am faced with a crossroads in my life and it's a little exciting and scary rolled into one. Thank you for sharing your experience about how you juggle your different roles. It gives me hope that I can do it too, and do it well. (I have a job interview on Monday, working as an advocate at a women and children's domestic violence shelter.) Anyway, I see that 'willingness' to explore myself, who I want to be at the end of my life, trying new things like taking this job or one similar to it, will help our family get 'unstuck' literally because of finances. I believe it also might help me see I am a strong woman and I can have different roles in my life and still do them all well, or at least the best I can. Life is such a growing journey.

I liked when you talked about how we are always changing and growing. Jake and I have spoken about this quite a bit. When we first met Jake was a punk-loving skater, with long chops and still adjusting to life after his mission. He didn't care too much about politics and the law. He was confused about where he wanted to go in life and what he wanted to become. I was pretty insecure in my abilities (trying hard to hide that away from the world) and wanted my life planned out minute by minute because that was stability, something I craved desperately. Now, 9 years later, we are such different people. Seeing how much we have grown and changed in nearly a decade makes me excited to think where we will be in another decade, two, three, four. We will be quite refined by the time our journey is over.

Anyway, thanks again for making me dig deep this morning. I really needed it. Lots of love.

Thank you for posting pictures of our beautiful niece! I have only seen one picture of her from when she was first born. Little Ava is a doll! Wish we could get our hands on her.

Thank you also for your thoughts on willingness. We are moving on Monday to Boise and I have some mixed feelings about it. Nothing is for sure about our move or future jobs or anything, but we feel that is where the Lord wants us to go so we are willing to go and see why He wants us there, whether it is for a short term lesson or for the long haul. Anyways, your thoughts put a new perspective on our move, so thank you!

We miss you and your boys!

A little late to the party, I know. I've caught up on your recent posts and appreciate your thoughts, as for the input I have on this subject I guess the first thing that came to mind was the willingness we need to submit ourselves to Him. I think it's hard when things can at times become confusing and unclear, it's at those times that I naturally seem to hold on tighter and tighter to the control of it and try to manipulate how I think life should go, (I can be pretty strong headed!) but I know that I should be more willing to let go and trust in the Lord for it's in these moments I feel loved, important in my role as a mother and valued as a daughter of God.

Finally, I am caught up!!! I am so glad to read your recent posts :).I really don't spend much time on my computer lately. My time is carefully managed between the new studio, family, and church. Happy late Birthday to Les (a little package will be coming his way) and a Happy Birthday to Grayson tomorrow! Audra's baby is adorable! How is it having a baby girl around all the boys?
I love your thoughts about willingness. "What am I willing to do?" has become a great solvent for me when I am stuck. It helps me look for opportunities to act on rather than allowing myself to be trapped in my spinning circles. You know me - I can get quite tangled! Willingness reminds me that I have a choice; I may not be able to change the circumstances around me, yet I do have a choice on how I navigate in those circumstances.
